We are the Champions!!

What a way to end 2012!

A welcome party at the airport, a victory parade across town and a cracking celebration at Jalan Besar stadium. What a day, what a week!

When the Lions made it to the Finals of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012, we at CROWD found ourselves tasked by our client Nike Singapore to prepare for two different scenarios – if Singapore were to win, we would hold a grand victory celebration parade for the Lions. If not, we would hold a thank you parade instead.

The plans had to be conceived and pieced together quickly, while leaving room for improvisation and alteration according to the final score line.

After the 1st leg, things were looking good. The Lions had one hand on the coveted trophy. The 2nd leg was nerve wrecking though with the Thais threatening to overcome their first leg deficit. The resolute Lions eventually held out and when the final whistle blew (which seemed to take an eternity), it signaled that history had been made, with Singapore becoming the undisputed kingpins of Southeast Asia with a record 4th AFF Championships title.

We had a little less than week to put the plans together, but the boys clinching the coveted trophy did make the work process much sweeter, not to mention easier for us!

There was a lot of coordinating to do – with Nike, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), emcees, the bus companies, the traffic police, our media friends and everyone else involved. From Singapore all the way to Bangkok, we had to make sure that everything fell into place. We even sent one of our own up to Bangkok for the second leg and made sure that she was on the same flight back as the victorious Lions so that we are constantly kept updated of the team’s schedule and to make it easier to coordinate with the team upon their arrival at the airport.

Here’s a highlight of the Victory Parade for the Lions, with the celebrations kicking off at the Airport!

The Lions were treated to a roaring welcome at Changi Airport Terminal 3, waiting for them was an estimated crowd of more than 500 turned up, to give their footballing heroes a homecoming befitting of rock stars. The large turnout consisted of mainly members of the Lions’ fan clubs and football fans who had turned up to show their appreciation of the triumphant Lions!

After the rousing reception, the lions proceeded onto an open-top bus as they paraded through the heart of the City and down the bustling Orchard Road where they waved to hundreds of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their idols!

The celebration reached a climax when the Lions arrived back at the home of Singapore football, Jalan Besar Stadium, to find the grandstand packed with 3,000 loyal supporters armed with huge banners, loud hailers and other props to hail the AFF Suzuki Cup champions! The lions made a majestic entrance onto the pitch as skipper and tournament MVP Shahril Ishak and Vice-Captain Hariss Harun led the Lions out of the tunnel to the podium carrying the well-deserved trophy!

After the customary thank you speeches, the lions showed their appreciation to their fans by kicking autographed balls into the stands, much to the delight of their loyal supporters who had been waiting for more than 4 hours for their heroes.

The event ended with the screening of a video that Nike specially commissioned for the event to mark the momentous occasion!
